The pricing of Sycamore Lane Therapeutic Riding Center services depends on whether or not the patient is appropriate for Hippotherapy or Therapeutic Riding. Please reference the general information section under program and financial information for full pricing information.
Hippotherapy
- Physical, Occupational, or Speech Therapist leading the horseback session.
- Therapists should be familiar with horses and be trained as a Level I of a Level II therapist by the American Hippotherapy Association.
- Horses are chosen specifically for this job dependent on their demeanor/ physical attributes.
- There will always be one other person (stable employee or volunteer) managing the horse during a Hippotherapy session.
- There may be a third individual, called a side walker spotting the child on horseback.
- The horse is essentially a therapeutic treatment tool.
- The session can be billed to insurance companies.
- The child will be on horseback, but may ride in a variety positions, or with a variety of adaptations, depending on what the therapist deems is most therapeutically appropriate for the child.
- A variety of activities, games, etc. may be incorporated into the session to make it both enjoyable and therapeutic for the rider.
- Individuals of any level of disability can be considered for Hippotherapy although there are some precautions and contraindications for this activity which does have some inherent risk due to the nature of the activity.
Therapeutic Riding
- Therapeutic Riding Instructor will be leading the horseback session.
- Instructors should be familiar with the special needs population and should have their NAHRA Instructor Certification.
- Horses are chosen specifically for this job dependent on their demeanor/ physical attributes.
- The rider typically is in the process of learning how to manage/ride the horse with the guidance of their instructor.
- There may be a second individual assisting initially but the goal is for the rider to learn as much independence as possible on the horse.
- The horse is a recreational animal.
- The session cannot be billed to insurance.
- The rider will typically ride mounted astride the horse with minor adaptations as needed, depending on what the instructor or a consultative therapist deems appropriate.
- A variety of activities, games, etc. may be incorporated into the session to make it both enjoyable and therapeutic for the rider.
- Individuals of a mild to moderate level of disability can be considered for the therapeutic riding, typically needing independent sitting balance with modifications and some understanding of basic safety guidelines.
